You’ve heard it a thousand times: “No white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.” And yet you pull those white pants out of the drawer on a nice day in May hesitantly wondering if you can put them on. Our team here at Get Healthy U got to talking about where this idea came from and why on earth we all feel like we can’t wear our pretty whites in the fall and winter months? We’ve all had that moment of “should we or shouldn’t we”? And guess what? After a little digging, we found the idea behind it to be completely outrageous and yet we’ve all fallen prey to the “No white after Labor Day” anthem. So where did this fashion rule come from in the first place?

There are a few theories out there about how this came to be. But one we came across most recently made us forever discount this fashion faux pas. To put it simply, it all started in the late 1800s as more and more people became millionaires; the wives who were considered to be “old money” wanted to come up with a way to distinguish themselves from the “new money” folk. So, they created a set of fashion rules that only they knew and when “new money” would come to a party not adhering to these rules, they would be clearly be out of the know. Talk about the original mean girls. One of these rules, you guessed it, was no white between Labor and Memorial Day.

You've heard it a thousand times: no white after labor day. But where does this rule come from and does it really matter?

So, while this theory can’t be entirely proven as the single culprit of an idea that’s been around for hundreds of years, it’s enough to prove to us that whatever the origination, we’re not buying it. We’re all about wearing what makes us feel confident and happy with ourselves, whether that makes us stick out or not.

And if we need any more reason to dismiss the rule, Coco Chanel wore white all year long—which is good enough for us! “White is a color not a season” has been credited to the fabulous Miss Chanel and we are on board with that.

So pull out those white jeans, your cute white flip flops and your white tops and enjoy! Of course when it comes to wearing white there are a few things to think about.

3 Rules When It Comes To Wearing White

You've heard it a thousand times: no white after labor day. But where does this rule come from and does it really matter?

Consider the fabric: White linen is too thin and cold in the winter. But white jeans may be thick enough with your cute brown boots. Also some white fabrics are super thin and see-through. No one wants to see your red thong through your white pants…

Consider the weather: If it’s pouring rain, white is not your friend. The wet t-shirt club is probably not one you want to be apart of plus, when wear white pants on a rainy day, dirt can splash up the back of your pants – not fun.

Consider the venue: White workout pants just scare us. White at a funeral… probably not. White at a wedding – not unless you’re the bride. Think about the occasion as you pick your whites.

Nonetheless, we are wearing our whites year round and think you should too!!
