This athletic high waisted sporty two-piece color block swimsuit is a favorite for me. I’m a fan of the sports bra style top.

I love the color blocking and it comes in 34 different color combinations.

Thanks to the high waisted bottoms trend, you get some full coverage over your lower abdominal area and your butt.

My Favorite Swimwear Accessories

When it comes to beachwear, swimwear cover-ups and accessories essential pieces that can boost your confidence and provide added style and coverage. Whether you want to relax by the pool or take a leisurely walk along the shore, these versatile garments are perfect for both on and off the beach.

Semi-Sheer Sarong Skirt with Tassels

I’m a big fan of sarong style swimsuit cover-ups.  At the pool or the beach they are so convenient and I think cute. Easy to take on and off, you just tie a knot with the ends.

This semi-sheer sarong skirt works for women of all ages and sizes. You can adjust the length by folding over a top layer.

The semi-sheer fabric and the tassels give it style. It comes in lots of colors and patterns.

I have the white in a longer style and the black in a shorter style.

There are 21,000 good reviews!

Sizing NotesThis is a one size fits all item.

Short Sleeve Crochet Swim Cover Up

I love the crochet detail on this short sleeve cover up dress allowing my swim suit to show through just a bit.

It has capped sleeves and is the perfect length, not too short for us middle aged ladies.

Wear it to pool, beach, or on the boat! It comes in 19 colors but I just stuck to the white which actually is a little off-white but I like it.

Sizing NotesI ordered a small. It runs true to size and it a little boxy in a good way. It comes in S-XXL.

High Waisted Palazzo Flowy Pants with Pockets

Because sometimes you just want a comfy pair of lightweight pants! They call these “beach pants” and I’ll for sure wear them with my swimsuit because they are so cute and comfy.

But, I’ll wear these as everyday pants too. The button detail is so cute and so are the tassels on the waist band. Pair with a cute tank and it’s an outfit.

Comes in four colors!

Sizing NotesThey are flowy and I am wearing a small. I’m 5’5” and 130 lbs. They come in S up to XXL!

Chiffon Shirt Dress Cover Up with Texture Detail

This chiffon dress cover up is seriously adorable. The fabric is a lightweight swiss dot and the white is slightly see through which I think is a great look. But it does come in 22 colors and the darker colors are not as see through.

The fit is so cute with a front pocket, 3/4 sleeve with button tab, and a side split asymmetrical hem.

I’ll throw this on to walk around and not have my bum hanging out. You could wear it in the resort, a restaurant or at the pool.

Sizing NotesI am wearing a small and it fits perfectly. I’m 5’5” and 130 lbs. This suit comes in XS up to 3XL!

2 Piece Matching Linen Shirt & Shorts Set

This adorable two piece set is not specifically for a swimsuit, but I think it makes a great cover up. There are times when I will wear the shorts alone with my swimsuit like on a boat or on the beach. There are times when I will wear just the oversized shirt and it’s a great look with a swimsuit.

And of course you can wear it together as an outfit. Tie the shirt in a knot or leave it flowing.

It comes in 24 colors. It’s flowy, and comfy. The shorts have a drawstring and pockets. And the shirt has that “men’s shirt” style. I am in love with this lounge set.

Sizing NotesIt’s a big oversized on purpose and I am wearing a small. I’m 5’5” and 130 lbs. This suit comes in S up to XL!

Wide Brim Straw Hat With UPF

This adorable wide brim hat solves all my problems and I love it! I have a huge head and it comes in two sizes and is adjustable with the neck strap if you want.

It’s soft, breathable and holds it’s shape. Plus, it’s packable in your suitcase.

This straw sun hat has UPF 80 rated protection. I have lots of sun damage from my youth and the wide brim on this hat shades my face, ears and neck.

It comes in nine color options and is highly rated!

Sizing NotesThis hat comes in two Sizes. Size M-L is recommended for head circumference around 22.2″-22.8″ (56.5-58cm) and Size L-XL is recommended for head circumference around 22.8″-23.4″(58-59.5cm). I hae the L-XL since I have a huge head… it’s genetic – lol!

Gold Ray Ban Sunglasses

I’m obsessed with these Ray Ban sunglasses. I have the Black on Gold /Clear Gradient Blue color.

The oversized frames are fashionable and cover a big part of your face and offer 100% UV protection.

They are a statement and come with a protective hard case.

Highly rated by customers and I give them a 5 out of 5.

Sizing NotesThese glasses come in two sizes: 56 mm and 59 mm. I have the larger lens because I have a bigger head and wanted to cover more of my face. I think the 56 mm would be the standard size.

Platform Espadrille Wedge Sandals

When I’m on vacation, I sometimes want an elevated look and these straw wedge slips ons do the trick.

I had to share because they are a comfortable fit, affordable and fun for many occasions even with jeans or a dress.

They come in several colors and run true to size.

As I get older I can’t stand sandals that squeeze my toes or are too high. These give the illusion of being high because of the platform.

Sizing NotesThese sandals run true to size. I’m normally an 8.5 and I have an 8.5.

Kopari Sunscreen

I’ll go on record saying I hate aerosol sunscreens. They are sticky and weird and often full of chemicals. I love this cleaner Kopari sunscreen!

This lightweight formula soaks in fast, leaving no sticky or greasy feel. Enjoy the perfect combo of sun protection, hydration, and a touch of shimmer that’ll have your skin looking radiant. (I promise it’s very subtle.)

It’s nourishing with macadamia & hibiscus oils that calm UV irritation while protecting and repairing. Vitamin E keeps you stress-free, and ethically sourced mica adds a rose gold shimmer that’ll have you glowing like never before.

Best part I think is the beachy scent. It’s a sweet coconut milk scent—it’s like a tropical vacation in a bottle!

Why Finding Bathing Suits Over 50 Can Be Tough

If you feel like it’s getting harder to find a great bathing suit as you get older, you aren’t alone! These are some of the most common reasons that so many women feel the same way:

Body Changes

As we women age, our bodies go through natural changes, such as alterations in skin elasticity, muscle tone, and body shape. We notice the cellulite and the sags and we want fabric and ruching in the right places.

Fashion Trends

Swimsuit designs often follow current fashion trends and seem to be targeted towards a younger generation. But as we age, we want swimwear that aligns with our own personal style while still being age-appropriate.

Comfort and Support

Yes, I’ve crossed the line where I now prioritize comfort and support over trendy designs. Especially if I’m heading for a pool exercise workout, or to swim laps.

Swimsuits that offer adequate coverage, support for breasts and booty, and some modesty can be limited, especially in mainstream fashion options.

Self-Image and Confidence

Age can bring a shift in self-perception, and many women may become more conscious of their bodies. Finding a swimsuit that makes us feel confident and comfortable in our own skin can be a crucial factor in the decision-making process.

Limited Options

Retail stores may not offer a wide variety of bathing suits catering to diverse body shapes and sizes, particularly for mature women. That’s when we turn to  swimsuit shopping on-line.

I love to try on a new bathing suit in the comfort of my own home with my natural lighting. It’s less stressful for sure!

Media and Cultural Influences

Societal expectations and media portrayals often contribute to the pressure women feel about their appearance. Photoshop ruins our minds. Most photos you see online of professional models in swimsuits have been touched up in some way even if it’s just a filter.

As older women, we need to ditch this perfection thing and realize our bodies are beautiful and amazing as is.

Functionality

Older women are more concerned with practicality and functionality in a swimsuit. I’m looking for features like high quality bottoms that cover my butt when I move or play with grandchildren.

I want UV sun protection, quick-drying fabric, and swimwear suitable for water activities. Balancing these functional aspects with style can be a challenge.

Best Swimsuits for Women By Body Type

Choosing bathing suits that flatter your body shape is key for women over 50. Regardless of whether you have an hourglass figure, apple shape, pear shape, or an athletic build, there are swimwear styles that can accentuate your best features and boost your confidence at the poolside.

Here are swimwear recommendations for different body types:

Hourglass Figure

If you have a defined waist with balanced bust and hip measurements, celebrate your curves with bathing suits that emphasize your hourglass shape. Look for one-piece suits with strategic open cutouts or bold prints that draw attention to your waistline.

High-waisted bikinis can also be a flattering choice, accentuating your curves and providing a retro vibe.

Apple Shape

If you carry weight around your midsection, bathing suits that divert attention from the waist area can be a great option. Consider one-piece suits with ruching, criss-cross designs, or shirring that create a slimming effect.

Tankinis with a longer top can also offer coverage and visually elongate your torso. Dark colors and vertical patterns can help create a more balanced silhouette.

Pear Shape

If your hips are wider than your bust, bathing suits that enhance your upper body and balance your proportions are ideal. Look for tankinis or two-piece suits with eye-catching details like ruffles, embellishments, or patterns on the tankini or bikini top.

Swim bottoms with a higher cut can elongate your legs and create a more balanced look.

Athletic Build

If you have an athletic build with broad shoulders and a straight waist, bathing suits that create curves and add femininity can be a great choice. Opt for one-piece suits with ruffles, pleats, or draping that add volume to your bust and hips.

Halter necklines, bandeau swim tops, and one shoulder designs can also soften your shoulder line and create a more balanced silhouette.

Choosing The Right Swimsuit Fabrics

The right fabric and prints can make a significant difference in how your bathing suit looks and feels. When it comes to swimwear fabrics, durability, comfort, and stretchability are key factors to consider.

Look for fabrics that are resistant to chlorine and other chemicals, as well as fabrics with UPF 50 (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) that functions as sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Here are some popular swimwear fabrics and their features:

  • Nylon: Durable, lightweight, quick-drying
  • Spandex: Elastic, provides stretch and flexibility
  • Polyester: Resistant to chlorine, retains color well
  • Lycra: Stretchy, retains shape, excellent recovery

When it comes to prints and patterns, there are endless options to suit your personal style. For a flattering look, consider opting for prints that incorporate darker colors or strategic placement of patterns to enhance your silhouette. Geometric patterns, florals, and abstract prints can add visual interest and draw attention to specific areas.

Remember, the key is to choose prints and patterns that make you feel confident and comfortable.

I hope my guide for the best bathing suits for women over 50 helps you find the perfect suit that enhances your confidence, and ensures you enjoy your time at the beach or pool with elegance and comfort. Embrace your body, explore different styles, and make a splash this year!
