Ingredients You’ll Need
💾 Would you like to save this for later?
- Cream Cheese: the best cream cheese to use is block cream cheese for this healthy frosting recipe. (Full fat cream cheese will have the creamiest texture.) The tub cream cheese or whipped varieties have a higher moisture content which can lead to a runny frosting.
- Greek Yogurt: the consistency of Greek yogurt varies from brand to brand – we like Fage brand since it is one of the thickest on the market. You’ll want to use a plain yogurt that is unsweetened for this easy frosting recipe without butter.
- Liquid Stevia: we recommend using a liquid sweetener like this liquid stevia for this frosting recipe. One tablespoon adds just the right amount of sweetness. The sweetness level varies from brand to brand, so if you use a different one you may have to adjust slightly based on your sweetness preference. The granulated stevia sold for baking isn’t as sweet so you would need to add more than 1 tablespoon. If you do want to use a 1:1 alternative baking sugar, we recommend ½ cup of this powdered sweetener. (You want to use powdered as the granulated sweetener isn’t fine enough for frosting.)
- Vanilla Extract: add delicious vanilla flavor to this frosting with vanilla extract.
Variations
- Almond Frosting: use ½ teaspoon of almond extract instead of vanilla for an almond flavored Greek yogurt frosting.
- Colored Frosting: before whipping up the frosting, add food coloring according to the package directions.

How to Make Easy Cream Cheese Frosting
- Start with Room Temp Cream Cheese: for best results, you’ll want to use cream cheese that is as close to room temperature as possible as it whips to a smoother consistency. If you don’t have time to let your cream cheese warm up on the counter, unwrap from the foil packaging and microwave for 10-20 seconds.
- Whip: use a stand mixer or electric hand mixer on high speed to whip cream cheese, greek yogurt, liquid stevia, vanilla extract, and salt together in a large mixing bowl until fluffy. (*Do not overmix as frosting will go from fluffy to thin/liquidy as the beaters warm up the cream cheese.) Use frosting right away if spreading on to a cake or cinnamon rolls; for piping, chill for at least an hour in the fridge before adding to a piping bag to frost your sweet treats. Leftover frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
