Ingredients for Crispy Ranch Chickpeas
Use these simple and fresh ingredients packed with nutritional value to make this delicious chickpea snack recipe. Be sure to check out the recipe card for the exact amounts of each ingredient you’ll need.
- Chickpeas: you’ll use one can of chickpeas (ie. garbanzo beans) for this recipe. If you have homemade chickpeas on hand, use 1 ½ cups of cooked chickpeas. The key to making this recipe work well is to make sure you dry your chickpeas very well.
- Olive Oil: You’ll use just a little extra-virgin olive oil so the chickpeas crisp and to help the ranch dressing stick to the chickpeas.
- Ranch Seasoning: For the ranch seasoning, you can use the premixed ranch dressing seasoning that comes in a package from the store or make your own.
Make Your Own Ranch Seasoning
If you don’t have any ranch dressing seasoning on hand, it’s really simple to make a batch of it at home. You can also make it dairy free.
You’ll have extra dip seasoning leftover so you can save it in a jar for a future batch of roasted chickpeas, or use it on roasted veggies or to make ranch dressing.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own ranch seasoning:
- 1 ½ tablespoons buttermilk powder (or nutritional yeast for dairy free/vegan), 1 ½ teaspoons dried parsley, 1 ½ teaspoons dried chives, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried dill, ½ teaspoon sea salt
- If you can’t find dried chives, substitute with 1 teaspoon onion powder
Other Air Fryer Chickpea Seasoning Ideas
We love the ranch seasoning on these crispy roasted chickpeas. However, you don’t have to make the recipe as written – you can add just about any spice you have in the pantry to these. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Curry powder, Tajin, cayenne, Za’atar, taco seasoning, smoked paprika, or chili powder
How to Make Roasted Chickpeas
This roasted chickpeas recipe is simple to put together in a few steps. I’ve included directions here for two different cooking methods: oven and air fryer. While both work, I might like the air fryer more – the cooking time is cut in half and they get just a little more crispy than in the oven.
Oven Method
Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Dry the Chickpeas: Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Spread them onto a clean kitchen towel (or paper towel) and dry well. Discard any skins that come loose. Don’t skip this step! It’s really important to have dry chickpeas or they won’t get crispy.
Season: Add dried chickpeas to a bowl and toss with the olive oil and ranch seasoning blend.
Bake: Transfer to a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool 5 minutes before serving.
Air Fryer Method
Dry the Chickpeas: Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Spread them onto a clean kitchen towel (or paper towel) and dry well. Discard any chickpea skins that come loose. Don’t skip this step! It’s really important to have dry chickpeas or they won’t get crispy.
Season: Add dried chickpeas to a bowl and toss with the olive oil and ranch spice blend.
Air Fry: It’s really important that the chickpeas aren’t overcrowded to ensure they crisp up. If you have a smaller air fryer, work in batches. Transfer the chickpeas to your air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Allow chickpeas to cool 5 minutes before serving.
Tools You’ll Need
How to Store Air Fryer Roasted Chickpeas
These roasted chickpeas taste best on the day that they are made. (That’s when they are the crispiest.) Store them in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days. Don’t put them in the fridge or else they’ll get soggy.
How Long Do Roasted Chickpeas Last?
Homemade roasted chickpeas are the crispiest the same day that they are made – so I usually do small batches at a time. However, you can store them in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days, but they lose some of their crispiness and can get chewy the longer they sit.
Roasted Chickpeas Nutrition
There are plenty of good reasons to keep your pantry stocked with a couple cans of chickpeas. Not only are they budget-friendly and versatile, but they offer a variety of essential nutrients in a small package.
Chickpeas provide lots of fiber (12.5 grams) and plant-based protein (14.5 grams) with a moderate amount of calories (269 kcals) per cup serving.
These nutritious beans are also a good source of B vitamins, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
A serving of these oven roasted chickpeas is only 125 calories, but has 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber – both of which make for a more satisfying snack.
If you’re looking to add more fiber to your diet, snacking on these roasted chickpeas is a delicious way to do it. Not to mention, the most recent scientific report for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is recommending we eat more beans.
