How I Shop for the Best Shorts for Women Over 50
Over the years, I’ve developed a bit of a system for shopping for shorts that are cute, comfortable, and confidence-boosting. Here’s what I keep in mind:
Fit and Flattery
Fit is everything when it comes to shorts. I look for styles that sit comfortably at the waist (no digging, please!) and offer enough coverage in the back. Mid-rise or high-rise styles tend to be the most flattering for mature bodies, and I avoid anything that’s too tight around the waist and thighs.
Longer inseams (think 3-7 inches) are my go-to for comfort and coverage, especially if I’ll be out and about. In athletic styles, 3 and 4 inch are best for me. In a bike short, I want longer!
Fabric and Stretch
The material makes a big difference. I like fabrics like polyester and lyrca that wear well when you move or sit. I avoid cotton and linen unless I am getting dressed up. Those fabrics hold sweat and wrinkle easily. A little bit of stretch is also a big win—it helps the shorts move with you and keeps them from feeling restrictive.
All of my favorite athletic and lounging pairs have pull-on waistbands (yes please!) for that easy, comfy fit without sacrificing style.
Style and Versatility
I like to have a mix of styles in my drawer but if I find a pair that works for my body shape and type, I buy several colors. Color is a fun way to switch things up too—white, black, blue, pink, green- all fun colors!

Why I love them: They are high waisted with a liner. They have a 3″ inseam but it feels a little bit longer length due to the cut. They offers good booty coverage for us ladies in my age group 😘 They do have a pocket too!

The Best Biker Shorts
Why I love them: I love the fit and versatility of these biker shorts! The quality is great but doesn’t dig into my thighs. I wear them for walking, working out, biking and even running errands! At my age, I wear a longer top with bike shorts. These are a 5″ inseam but you can get them shorter or longer.

Why I love them: This comfortable pair of shorts has a flat waist band instead of gathered, a 4 inch inseam, and I love the look and feel! They cover the whole booty! I have 5 colors.

Why I love them: This pair of shorts has a high waist band and a liner. They sit a little lower than the BMJL shorts. They also have a 4 inch inseam, and looser fit. I like the detail on the front with the seams and side pocket. I own four colors!

High Waist Relaxed Shorts
Why I love them: These shorts are so soft and stretchy! They are a great length for good butt coverage, and the quality of material is amazing. It’s a lookalike feel to Lululemon Softstream. They have an elastic waistband with a toggle. No liner in this pair – these are great for lounging and casual warm days. I can’t believe they’re Amazon!
