Nothing is better than a simple homemade guacamole if you’re looking for a simple appetizer or snack. Make this Chipotle copycat recipe with just a handful of fresh ingredients and 5 minutes of your time.
Taco night just got a whole lot tastier! This easy homemade guacamole recipe is the perfect addition to your favorite homemade taco recipe or even burrito bowls. If you’re a fan of the guacamole at Chipotle – this healthy guacamole recipe is a copycat of their recipe.
I love making a batch of this homemade guacamole whenever I need a quick and easy appetizer or a healthy snack.
Speaking of healthy, avocados are rich in heart healthy fats great for weight loss, fiber, and essential nutrients like potassium. If you’ve never made guacamole yourself, you’ll be surprised by how much better it is than the grocery store guacamole!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Avocado: perfectly ripe avocado should yield to firm gentle pressure but it should be mushy. Also be sure to cut out any brown parts. Avocados come with tons of great health benefits!
- Red Onion: use red onion rather than white onion for both color and flavor in your guacamole.
- Garlic: we love the flavor that a little garlic adds to a good guacamole (and using a garlic press makes it easy!). This is optional, but we recommend it for this simple recipe! If you find fresh garlic too strong, substitute with ¼ to ½ teaspoons of granulated garlic powder.
- Cilantro: adds freshness and that characteristic cilantro flavor that we love in Mexican dishes.
- Lime Juice: use fresh lime juice (rather than the bottled lime juice from the store) for the best fresh flavor. Feel free to play with how much is added, some like more lime flavor than others. If you don’t have limes, you can substitute with lemon juice in a pinch.
- Jalapeno: fresh jalapeno pepper adds a bit of a kick to this easy guacamole recipe. The spice level of jalapenos varies so taste your pepper before adding it to the guacamole. You can also add a spicy kick to this recipe with some hot sauce.
How to Make Simple Homemade Guacamole
- Start by carefully cutting your avocados in half and removing the pit. Scoop the avocado out of the peel with a spoon into a bowl. Mash with a fork or potato masher until mostly mashed, but leave some chunky pieces.
- Add all of the remaining ingredients (chopped onion, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, jalapeno, sea salt) to the mashed avocado. Taste and adjust to your liking – adding more salt or lime juice if needed. You’ll be making this one repeat – it’s the best guacamole recipe!
Is Guacamole Healthy?
Yes! Guacamole dip makes for a delicious, but healthy snack or appetizer. Avocados are a good source of heart healthy monounsaturated fats as well as fiber and essential nutrients like vitamin k, potassium vitamin E, and folate.
Guacamole is also an allergen and diet-friendly appetizer since this recipe is: vegan, gluten free, paleo, and whole30.
How to Store Leftover Guac
Avocados brown when they are exposed to air, so you want to avoid air exposure to your leftover guacamole. The best way to store guacamole is using this amazing fresh guacamole storage container. It’s a kitchen must-have!
Store in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days, but guacamole is best served the day it is made.
What to Serve with Guacamole
Now that you’ve whipped up a big bowl of delicious guacamole, you may be wondering what to serve with it. Here are our favorite ways to serve our go-to guacamole recipe!
- Grab a bag of your favorite tortilla chips and use those to scoop up this guacamole. Crackers and pretzels work too.
- Pair this avocado-based dip with some homemade salsa like our black bean and corn salsa.
- Want a lower calorie option for dipping? Use fresh chopped carrots, celery, or red pepper for scooping up your guac.
Add a scoop of this guacamole to these mahi mahi fish tacos, Taco Bell copycat Mexican pizzas, or healthy chipotle chicken burrito bowls.

How much is one serving?
What is the sodium content of a serving?
I’d love to have the answer to these questions until then I will just have to look at this yummyness.
A serving is approximately 1/2 cup. And there is 296 mg of sodium per serving. Hope that helps!
