4 Step Guide To Sticking To Your Fitness Resolutions

If you didn’t quite reach your goals this year, don’t beat yourself up! After all, if you learn from failure, it isn’t truly failure. Whether or not your goal was to get in shape, finish a creative project, save for a vacation, or any other number of resolutions, if you didn’t quite make it happen, it’s OK! Last year is in the past, and it’s time to take a deep breath and press the reset button. Here is our simple, step-by-step guide on how to take that last year’s missteps and turn them into this year’s success.

Following these four steps, you’ll look at your own year in review and figure out what went wrong in 2016 and how to make things go right and help you stick to your resolution in 2017! We suggest literally getting out a piece of paper and writing these things down.  Writing down your thoughts has been proven to bring clarity and focus. If you follow any of the very successful self improvement writers like Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy, they preach writing your goals down and reviewing them often to give your journey direction and reaffirm what you are working towards.  So, if you are ready  and have a piece of paper and a pencil, here are your four steps:

Step 1: Recognize your successes, no matter how small

The first step to figuring out what went wrong is acknowledging what you did RIGHT. There’s no way you didn’t do something good, meet some small goals, or make progress in some areas of your life. You certainly had some successful moments in the past 12 months! Pat yourself on the back and be proud of successes, no matter how small! By pinpointing your peaks and writing them down, you will start to see that your year isn’t defined by the lows, and that a failed resolution does not define an entire year of your life! Rack your brain, compile that list of wins in 2016 and reaffirm that you are worthy!

Step 2: Analyze what went wrong

Even though we hate to do it, it’s important to recognize our failures. Though it’s an unpleasant process, it’s educational! Knowing what you did wrong will help you make a plan for success. There are two major types of failure:

  1. You didn’t try hard enough to reach your goal
  2. You tried your hardest, but still failed.

Recognizing whether or not you put in enough effort to reasonably meet your goal is really important because it will help you in planning for future success: either you give your work ethic a boost or set a more realistic goal. Take the time to write down what went wrong and realize that struggle is part of the process.

Step 3: Move forward

The biggest step in learning from failure? Letting go and moving forward. It’s easier said than done, but if you allow yourself to be bogged down and upset about past failures, you leave so little room for future success. Whatever it is that held you back in 2016, say goodbye, because it isn’t invited to join you in 2017!

You failed. So what? This year, you don’t have to. 2017 is going to be your year!

Step 4: Start fresh!

This is the best part. As the saying goes, there is a reason the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror.  Keep looking forward.  Now that you’ve honestly figured out what went wrong, patted yourself on the back for what went right, and move on! You’re ready for a clean start. What a great feeling!

This is a time of year where people make big resolutions that fall flat come February. Don’t let that be you. Get an accountability buddy or join an online group that holds you accountable! Do whatever you think will most help you to be in control of where you go in 2017!

I really like the first tip - if you don't "pat yourself on the back" for what you did accomplish, there's not much of a chance you'll succeed this time. That's where a workout buddy or a significant other who supports you, can help, since they can see things differently than you and realize what you did accomplish. Good luck to all those fitness goals in 2017!
